YES... it really is that bad. If he's actually HIT your friend and spit on her... then that is someone you need to avoid. It may not seem like that big of a deal now but imagine how you'll feel when he punches you in the face.... and the more you let yourself fall for him, the harder it will be to get away. Do yourself a HUGE favor and just forget about him.
